In the summer of 2015, Matt “Kroc” Kroczaleski, a former US Marine and world record-holding weightlifter, was revealed to be transgender. The response was overwhelming: her sponsors withdrew their support, her parents cut ties with her, she was prohibited from competing, and she adopted the name “Janae.” This film chronicles Janae’s journey as she seeks to carve out her place in the world. Initially, she aspired to shed her muscular physique to appear more feminine, but found it challenging to lose the muscle she had worked so hard to build. Now, she navigates life alternating between embodying an alpha male persona and embracing her identity as a delicate woman. Can Janae manage her struggles with muscle retention? Will her transition from male to female bring her the peace she desires? Will society accept a muscular woman weighing 250 pounds? Is her journey one of personal redemption, or is it leading to physical and psychological turmoil?
