The King Kong That Appeared in Edo

This film, now lost, is regarded as one of Japan’s earliest entries into the Tokusatsu genre. The special effects were crafted by Fuminori Ohashi, who asserts that he served as a modeling consultant for the 1954 Godzilla film—a claim contested by modeler Eizo Kaimai and art team member Shinji Hiruma. According to a synopsis in the March 1938 edition of Kinema Junpo, the “Kong” depicted in this movie was not truly a giant creature.
