The Grown Ups
For four decades, Anita, Rita, Ricardo, and Andrés have been part of a school designed for children with Down syndrome. However, as they reach their mid-40s, they are growing weary of this secure and predictable setting. Some of them find the work in the school’s bakery lacks excitement and are seeking more personal freedom. Anita and Andrés, who are in love, still reside with their families but dream of having a private space to themselves. They aspire to marry and start a family. Unfortunately, the society they live in is not prepared to support their quest for greater independence. Despite receiving training to become “responsible adults,” they remain reliant on others to make decisions for them, which is a source of frustration.
