SURGE is a documentary film that chronicles the unprecedented wave of first-time female candidates who ran for office, achieved victories, and disrupted the political landscape during the landmark 2018 midterm elections. The film tracks the journeys of three candidates from Texas, Indiana, and Illinois, each aiming to transform their traditionally Republican districts into Democratic ones. Among them is Lauren Underwood, who made history as the youngest Black woman elected to Congress. With a background as a licensed nurse and public health specialist, Lauren is now actively engaged in advocating for COVID-19 relief as a new member of Congress.
