Wake in Fright

John Grant is on his way back to Sydney after spending a year teaching in a single-room school in the Outback. Not long into his journey, he crashes into a kangaroo and ends up stranded in a tiny mining town, waiting for his car to be fixed. With nothing much to occupy his time except drinking beer, John gets lured into a wild, illicit game of two-up. Initially, he enjoys a brief, thrilling run of luck, but soon loses everything, setting off a perilous chain of events that leave him shattered and despondent.
