Cheers

Cheers

Cheers is a classic American sitcom that aired for 11 seasons between 1982 and 1993. Produced by Charles/Burrows/Charles Productions alongside Paramount Network Television for NBC, the series was the brainchild of James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles. Set in a Boston bar called Cheers, the show follows a group of regular patrons who gather to drink, unwind, and socialize. Its iconic theme song, penned and performed by Gary Portnoy with Judy Hart Angelo, famously includes the line “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” which became the show’s tagline.

Debuting on September 30, 1982, Cheers faced the threat of cancellation after its first season due to low ratings. However, it eventually rose to become one of the most popular TV shows in the United States, securing a spot in the top ten ratings for 8 out of its 11 seasons, including one season at the top. The series was a staple of NBC’s Thursday night “Must See TV” lineup. Its much-anticipated finale aired on May 20, 1993, and all 275 episodes have been successfully syndicated globally. Cheers was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series every year it aired, winning 28 Emmy Awards from a then-record 117 nominations. The character Frasier Crane went on to star in his own spin-off series, which ran until 2004 and featured guest appearances from nearly all the main and supporting characters from Cheers.
