Mysterious Island
In this film adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1874 novel “The Mysterious Island,” the narrative unfolds during the American Civil War, as the city of Richmond, Virginia, is devastated by famine and death. A group of five Northern prisoners of war decide to flee the conflict by commandeering a hot air balloon. As they drift through the night, they awaken to discover they are stranded on a deserted island. However, they soon realize they are not alone. The island is strewn with debris and inhabited by a diverse group of survivors who have been displaced across space and time. Among them are Jules and Abby Fogg, two young women from the present day who became stranded while flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Together, they must defend themselves against ruthless pirates, fearsome creatures, and a volatile volcano on the brink of eruption. Their hope for survival and escape is rekindled when they meet the island’s longest-standing inhabitant, Captain Nemo. With his assistance, they embark on a mission to engineer their escape.
