‘Master Harold’ … And the Boys

The film revolves around Hally, a young white South African teenager, who finds himself torn between the prejudiced views of his father and the more positive influence of his caretaker, Sam. Sam, a black waiter who also serves as Hally’s friend and mentor, offers him enriching experiences that contrast sharply with his father’s racist humor, which Hally is expected to tolerate. After a particularly degrading incident with his father, Sam helps Hally discover a sense of pride in his own accomplishments.
