In Los Angeles, Emily Brown struggles with kleptomania and a pill addiction while attending therapy to address her compulsive behavior. She longs for her father and has a history of shoplifting, which has landed her in trouble with the law. Her mother, Teresa, also battles her own compulsive shopping habits. Nick, a security guard at Bernstein’s department store, becomes intrigued by Emily after observing her on surveillance cameras. When Nick finds himself in a bind due to his involvement in dealing ecstasy, he coerces Emily into assisting him with a heist at Bernstein’s.
