I Am I
“I AM I” follows the journey of Rachael, a young woman who encounters her estranged father, Gene, at her mother’s funeral. She soon realizes that Gene is suffering from severe delusions, mistaking her for his deceased wife. During a visit to the assisted living facility where Gene resides, Rachael learns that he has Korsakov’s Syndrome, a type of retrograde amnesia, which led her mother to admit him there a year prior. Gene’s memory is frozen at the age of thirty-three, and he perceives himself as still being a young man. Unable to convince him of her true identity, Rachael decides to embrace his delusion by assuming the role of her mother. This allows her to engage in “normal” conversations with him. As time passes, Rachael visits Gene daily, finding creative ways to weave elements of his past into their current interactions.
