Open Heart
Eight young Rwandans set out on a perilous quest, leaving their families to seek critical heart surgery in Sudan. Their hearts, damaged by a curable condition stemming from childhood strep throat, leave them with only a few months to live. “Open Heart” explores the interconnected efforts of Dr. Emmanuel, Rwanda’s sole government cardiologist striving to save his young patients, and Dr. Gino, the chief surgeon at the Salam Center, who is battling to keep his hospital operational. This facility is Africa’s sole provider of free, life-saving cardiac surgery for the millions in need.
