Witchblade
Witchblade is an anime series inspired by the American comic book of the same name. Rather than adapting the original storyline, the creators opted to develop a completely new narrative with fresh characters. This collaboration between the Japanese studio Gonzo and the American publisher Top Cow, which owns the Witchblade rights, was licensed for distribution in the United States. The English-dubbed version debuted on the US cable network IFC in January 2008, airing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3:30 AM ET, with the series finale broadcast on June 13, 2008. The series is available for purchase and download on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and the first twelve episodes can be downloaded via Amazon’s Unbox service. Additionally, it is accessible on Netflix Instant Stream and was available for free on Hulu as of June 2011.
By December 2008, six DVD volumes were available in the USA and Canada, with the first volume released in September 2007. A complete boxed set containing all 24 episodes and an extra disc with special features is also available. A Blu-ray box set was released on November 3, 2009.
The anime was directed by Yoshimitsu Ohashi, known for his work on Galaxy Angel and Galaxy Angel Z, with character designs by Uno Makoto, who also designed characters for Stellvia and Love Hina.
